M578

The M578 is a fully tracked, self-propelled light recovery vehicle used to move or tow immobilized equipment using a crane boom. It saw action during the Vietnam War. The M578 features a .50 caliber M2HB machine gun and requires a crew of 3: a crane operator, rigger, and driver.

The M578 was produced by Bowen McLaughlin York beginning in 1962; they later merged with FMC Corporation to form United Defense, which was acquired by BAE Systems. The recovery vehicle has an operational range of 450 miles and can manage rough and marshy terrain, as well as snow or ice. It can reach a speed of 37 mph.
